Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Frank Sill Torres is the Director of the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Bremerhaven, Germany, and holds the Chair of Resilience of Maritime Systems at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Bremen, Germany.
He has as an academic background in Electrical Engineering, having earned his Diploma (Dipl.-Ing.) from the University of Rostock, Germany, in 2002, followed by a Doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) in 2007. In 2023, he completed his Habilitation in Computer Science at the University of Bremen.
Prof. Sill Torres’s professional career began with a postdoctoral fellowship and a senior engineer position at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, from 2007 to 2010. He was subsequently appointed as a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at UFMG, where he remained until 2018. In 2018, he joined the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Bremen, where he led research initiatives in resilient systems and maritime security. In 2019, he became Head of the Department of Resilience of Maritime Systems at DLR’s Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven. By 2021, he assumed the role of Acting Director of the institute. Since 2026, he serves as the Director of the institute and holds the professorship at the University of Bremen. Additionally, since 2020, he has been lecturing at the University of Applied Sciences of Bremerhaven.
His academic contributions include authoring and co-authoring over 200 scientific publications and books, as well as two granted patents. His involvement in the academic community extends to serving on several program committees for international conferences and organizing numerous workshops and conferences. From 2014 to 2020, he was an Associate Researcher at the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Since 2024, he is a member of the Review Board “4.42-04 Hardware Systems and Architectures for Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence” of the German Research Foundation (DFG).
His current research focuses on the resilience of critical infrastructures, maritime security, dependable computing and emerging technologies.
